Centenary Square, Birmingham

+ Project Description

Centenary Square is a vast empty space in the heart of Birmingham. It is lifeless and desolate, and as a citizen you feel lost within it. It was created by an ad hoc amalgamation of spaces between buildings over the past century. An international design competition was held to create meaning for this forgotten space.

Our Long listed competition entry created three new squares, each with a different quality of space and openness, to showcase the site’s industrial past. The squares were tied together by a network of bronze and stone paths crisscrossing the site in what appeared to be a random fashion however, when read as a whole from the Library of Birmingham, these pathways revealed the site’s hidden archaeology.

Our proposal was long listed amongst an outstanding list of international entrants.
